Westward Ho . . . Again!

August 8, 2021

After a memorable time in Deadwood we headed west again in the hopes of Glacier National Park being open. We first headed up into North Dakota where we boondocked one night at a Lions Club park in the little town of Bowman.

It was really a nice little park. We could let the boys run around off leash a little and, except for big rigs driving along the main road it was pretty quiet, and we were the only ones there. We also had a nice thunderstorm while we were there.

The next day we hit the road with the intention of staying that night at Fort Peck (MT) where there is a huge lake. How cool would that be?

FORT PECK

We had thus far had decent luck getting a spot at the “first come, first served” campgrounds, as long as we got there no later than Thursday. But, when got to Fort Peck that Thursday the campground was completely full. What? Why? Because the Governor’s Cup was taking place that weekend, starting Friday so everybody participating was already there. What will we do now? We were told we could go up the hill and park for free in the upper parking lot. OK, no problem with that . . . EXCEPT, when we got up there the wind was RAGING somewhere around 70 mph! AGH!!!! With a storm approaching, and being on a steep cliff above the lake, we decided this wasn’t the safest place to stay so we got back on the road and drove another couple of hours to Nelson Reservoir where they have free camping.

NELSON RESERVOIR

YAY! We found a spot! This was an ok place, an odd mixture of lake and desert. As soon as we got parked we took the boys out. They had been “holding it” for some time (they are such troopers). Well, we were out about one minute when we were attacked by hoards of mosquitos!!! We both got bit up pretty bad. So we stayed in the rig until the next morning. We armed ourselves with repellent before taking the boys for a walk but as we were walking, those little buggers were landing all over Larry’s clothes, on his back and legs. I kept smacking them. Larry didn’t believe it was mosquitos and that I was just using that as an excuse to beat up on him LOL. I told him not to give me any ideas. HAHAHA!

The next day we drove on to the little town of Cut Bank (MT) where this odd penguin is the town mascot.

We had a reservation at an RV park which was also odd, but interesting nonetheless. The owner said he had just recently bought the park and had a lot of work to do. We agree ;-).

It was pretty warm so we were happy to have hook-ups so we could run the A/C.

Early the next morning we found a trail that led to an area below the park where there was a river. It was a fun and interesting hike. The boys really enjoyed it too.

We saw some flowers along the way.

Further along the river I was suddenly startled by Larry yelling “NO!” and saw him pulling Rex back. I instinctively pulled Max back and then I saw why Larry reacted that way. The poor thing was dead though. RIP.

We also saw LOTS of Swallows nesting on a bridge! Have you ever seen so many nests??

Here is that statue of Jesus from down below. I wondered if the park had been a church or a mission in a past life.

Pretty cool huh?

Later that day we went and drove around the town, which is pretty small and seemed to be more industrial than residential. Many of the businesses were closed up for good (because of Covid). So sad :-(. But we came across the Cut Bank Creek Brewery, which seemed to really be the only gig in town, so we decided to go in and partake of some refreshment ;-).

Not a great pic :-\. I’ll blame it on the lighting LOL.

It was a cute little place and the gal working there was really nice and helpful.

They make their own ales so we decided to each get a sampler flight.

My four were Roughneck Red, Penguin Piss (yes, Penguin Piss. LOL), Medicine “something or other” (can’t remember and the pic is terrible) and Railspike IPA. Larry also got the Penguin Piss and three different ones so we could sample each other’s as well. Penguin Piss, which is their signature brew won hands down! It was really good!

They had T-shirts for sale that said “I drank Penguin Piss at Cut Bank Creek Brewery”. After thinking it over for about 10 seconds we decided not to get one. HAHA! But it was a fun way to pass some time.

As we left we saw these fun sculptures next door to the Brewery. How clever.

Hey, if you ever find yourself in Cut Bank, MT, be sure to go to the Cut Bank Creek Brewery and have yourself a nice tall glass of Penguin Piss!  BWAAAAAA!!

To be continued . . .
