The Return to Kalispell

August 8, 2021

Kalispell, being the “Gateway to Glacier” seemed the obvious choice to be our “base” while visiting Glacier National Park. Luckily we were able to boondock at the same place we were before. Such an awesome ranch and host!!!

We arrived and got settled. It was nice so we sat outside. Max was being a little anti-social.

The next day we headed off to Glacier. As I expected it was amazing and fantastic! However, what kept it from being absolutely epic was haze from the distant fires, but still absolutely worth the trip! There were huge mountains, waterfalls, weeping walls, rivers, tunnels and . . . glaciers. Well, you get the idea. I will let the pics speak for themselves.

At the summit, called Logans Pass, there was a visitor center/gift shop. The line was a mile long to get in so we passed. Good thing because we would’ve missed this beautiful herd of Big Horn Sheep right across the road from where we were parked!

Aren’t they awesome?

We went as far as St. Mary’s where we turned around and went back. We were sad to see that apparently a fire had gone through that area. We don’t know how recent it was. Despite the burned trees, it was still beautiful.

There was some interesting red rock in the area too.

And Max LOVES to get up on rocks!

Maxwell – King of the Rocks! LOL

So it was a great day at Glacier National Park . . . even with the haze. Larry’s oldest daughter, Jamie, and her friend, Shane, met up with us at the ranch for our last night. The host was kind enough to let them stay even though they didn’t have a reservation. The next day they headed to Eureka (MT) where she saw Shane off. He was embarking on an epic bicycle ride down the Continental Divide to the Mexican border at New Mexico. Jamie then went off on her own adventure. Because of the fires burning the air quality was declining and, between that and the heat, we decided we would head toward the west coast to get away from the smoke and the heatwave. But, before doing that we wanted to see Polson, a town at the southern tip of Flathead Lake. So we packed up and headed south.

To be continued . . .
