St. Regis

May 28, 2021

As I mentioned in a previous post, it takes a lot of logistical planning when it comes to finding a spot to boondock. We’re using three websites to do this, which are boondockerswelcome.com, boondocking.org and freecampsites.net. We look for two possibilities that are on our current route and then put the coordinates into Google Earth and zoom in to determine if the road and the spot will accommodate our coach. But, even with all our planning, it doesn’t always pan out, for a variety of reasons.

Such was the case this time! We picked out two possible sites and hit the road. The scenery became prettier as we went along.

When we got to the first site it was closed because the rest stop that accessed it was under construction. Hmmm. So we headed to the second site but this one was also closed! We were beginning to wonder where we would dock for the night. We decided to continue on and came into St. Regis where we saw a sign that said “St. Regis Campground”. Hmmm. Campgrounds can be expensive but, since we were already into evening, we decided to check it out. The cost wasn’t bad and they could accommodate our coach including electric and water hookups! Woohoo!

It was the cutest campground and I could kick myself for forgetting to get pictures. The hosts were very nice. There were carved wooden bear statues all over the place and each space had some kind of detail such as flowers or rocks or whatever. A lot of thought was put into this place and it was well cared for. They also had a “Dog Walk” which was a wide path outside of the spaces with lots of bushes. The boys loved it. One of the funnest things was an old fashioned phone booth (remember these?) outside the office. I did manage to get a picture of that bit of nostalgia.

We had also seen a big sign that said “Huckleberry Milkshakes”. Apparently this is quite a big thing in these parts and, never having had even a huckleberry we had to try it. The next day we loaded the boys in the car and headed out to explore the area. On our way back we stopped at the St. Regis Travel Center to procure a couple of these “world famous” shakes. They were quite good, a little too sweet and oh so filling so that was our dinner. 😀

To be continued . . .
