Before we left Wyoming we went to see Devil’s Tower which rises 1,267 feet (386 m) above the Belle Fourche River. A sacred place to over 20 Native American tribes, the Tower is also known as Bear Lodge. Devils Tower was designated as America’s first national monument in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.
It doesn’t look like much from a distance but as you get closer . . . OMGosh!!! Please pardon the bugs on the windshield ;-\

Late in the day we found a spot at the campground there and decided to make the hike around the tower the next day. This was the view from our campsite opposite the tower.

This was the view from our site toward the tower.

So, the next day we drove to the parking area and headed out on foot to the trail. What an awesome trail it was!

There was a sign telling us not to touch or remove the prayer cloths that we would see along the way. Apparently people from the local tribes (and others) come here to pray and they leave pieces of cloth on the trees.

As we got closer you could see the rocks that had fallen from the years and years of erosion.

I found it so interesting that the butte seemed to have vertical columns. How could this be?

We found an exhibit that had possible explanations of how the butte was formed.

Fascinating! We continued along the trail and went all the way around the tower.

What a mind boggling and amazing thing, this Devils Tower. So glad we came here!

To be continued . . .
