Bats you say?

April 8, 2022

As I write this it’s in the high 80’s with the potential to reach 91. None of the weather apps agree on the precise temps but everyone can agree that it’s HOT! Those of you who know me know that I don’t like temps over 75, unless I can stay in the shade, which I’m doing right now. I’m in our shaded patio overlooking the lake.

You may have seen pics of this view before, perhaps at sunset, but this I just took. It’s a bright sunny day with a nice breeze that keeps the warm air moving. That definitely helps!

Not many people are playing golf today. Can’t say I blame them. I’d go either early in the morning or just long enough before dusk to finish the course (it closes at dusk). Speaking of golf, I’ve only played twice. I like it but being out in the sun is not wise for me so I don’t think I’ll be playing much over the Summer. Instead, the Pickle Ball courts near us get shade late in the afternoon, and are lighted for a while after dark, so I look forward to taking that up soon.

Speaking of dusk, something really cool that we learned of a couple days ago is that, when dusk falls, bunches of little bats come out and skim the lake! I’d love to share a video of it but, for whatever reason, I can’t utilize videos in this blog. ARG. The bats are difficult to see in a still shot and I couldn’t find a decent likeness online so you’ll have to take my word for it.

Bats use “echolocation” to navigate. You can read what that is here:

It’s quite a mesmerizing sight and what really boggles my mind is how so many of them (100s?) can fly around and not run into each other. The first night we witnessed this I was standing outside the fence in the picture above and I was aware that one or more bats kept flying past me, within two feet. They fly SO fast and yet they never touched me!

I know some people think bats are creepy. Many, think immediately of vampires and Dracula and such. However, there are lots of bat species, few of which actually feed on blood. I learned lots of fascinating info about these night flyers at:

So, bats are an important part of our ecosystem and I think they’re pretty cool. I don’t know which species come to our lake but I’m grateful that they do because they eat LOTS of bugs and, otherwise, all those bugs would be bugging me!

Go BATS!!!
