Spider Lines

July 17, 2022

This time of year, Summer, everywhere I look I see spider webs and what I call spider lines. You know those “threads” that run between bushes, trees, or anything else they can attach to? It’s so annoying to walk into one and it gets on your face and arms. It tickles and feels like a bug is crawling on you.

On the Terminix website it says:

“Spider webs are intricate marvels of engineering, beautiful and strong. And if you walk into one, you instantly become a karate master. In this moment, you really only want to know two things:  “IS IT ON ME?!” and “WHAT KIND OF SPIDER WAS THAT?!”

HAHAHA!!

At the same time, I ponder in awe at how spiders can make them. How do they get them to  just float between two objects, sometimes many feet apart? Pondering this of course led me to search the internet for info and I came across an interesting site which explained that these silk threads are extremely strong, stretchable and can stop a bee in full flight. Amazing. Who would’ve guessed? But it still doesn’t explain how they get it from one object to another. It’s a mystery.

Although some spiders are pretty scary, either because of the way they look or their poisonous factor, I have to say that I’ve gained much respect for the little critters. Obviously, we have to stay clear of some of them but how fascinating is it to watch one weave a web? Did you know that some spiders use a web to catch their pray and some do not? Some create a funnel like web that traps their prey.

Other webs are kind of funky . . .

And others are just downright mesmerizing!

They are certainly dedicated and persistent creatures. Imagine if your full-time job was to build a structure that catches your meals and, all the while, trying not to become another critter’s prey. Pretty intense.

Although I’ll continue to knock down those spider lines to avoid getting them, and maybe a spider on me, I will honor and admire the amazing architect that created it.
