Bye Bye Explorer . . .

December 31, 2022

As you probably figured out, I’ve taken a break from my blog but I’m back now and will post whenever I have something that might be interesting to you, or just update you on our lives.

So, you may remember that, back in August 2021, while driving my Explorer from Blaine, Washington to Spokane (to pick up our rig from the shop), we had a collision with a Tesla. When we got back to Descanso at the end of our travels, the Ford dealer ordered the parts they thought they would need for the repairs. After waiting 8 months for the parts to come in we finally were able to take it in for service. After a few days they called to say there was much more damage than they anticipated and they would let us know when they finished their evaluation. Well, after about a week they called and said they were totaling the Explorer. So, we took it down and relinquished it to the dealer and then got a check in the mail. Time to look for another car . . .

Thankfully we still had Larry’s Explorer to use in the meantime. Eventually we found an older (2013) BMW X1 for a really great price.

Really cute isn’t it? We were glad we found it just in time for our 3-week trip to Arizona and Big Bear (more on that in another post). Seeing as Larry’s Explorer gets about 15 mpg and the BMW gets about 34 mpg, it was a no brainer. We love this car! It’s so much fun to drive. However . . . we had a little trouble with it on the trip. When we got back we took it in for a valve cover replacement and a few other tune-up type things and it’s driving like a charm. What a great little car!

Since we’re both retired, we’re planning to sell Larry’s Explorer. I guess we don’t really need 2 vehicles. Most of the time we’re together if we go into town and, if we ever need to take the BMW in for service, we’ve got plenty of friends/neighbors here who can give us a ride and then get lunch with us at our favorite little hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant, La Cocina. It’s about a mile down the road from the mechanic and they have the BEST chimichanga we’ve ever had! YUMMERS!
